Getting Started

You’ll first want to decide what type of job you’re looking for. Do you want to be on the front lines, dealing with customers? Or do you prefer working behind the scenes? Being more flexible gives you a better chance of finding a job, but make sure it’s something you’re interested in too. It shouldn’t be hard though because the mall has lots of opportunities to choose from. Just do a quick search for “mall jobs” on a popular job site, like Indeed, and you’ll find a bunch of options. Here are some of the best!

Retail Stores

Working in retail is often one’s first job. There’s lots variety in terms of the roles available and you get to develop the skills necessary for your future career. And what better place to find retail work than at the mall! It’s a popular job for students, looking for work while going to school. Employers know this and are really flexible for scheduling workers. If a store is only hiring part-time you can pick up a second job in the mall. That way you can work more without having to worry about another commute.

Food Services

The food court is a great starting place for aspiring chefs. You get to build essential skills like chopping and meal prep, while learning good time management. Bosses may even be willing to put you through culinary school to help realize your dreams. Again, there are lots of options in the mall with all sorts of restaurants. And most have entry-level openings without any experience required. You will need to get your food handlers permit though. It just involves a quick test and a small fee.

Mall Security

Another way to make money at shopping malls is by working on behalf of the mall itself, for example by working in the security department. Consider working in mall security if you’re physically capable and prefer working independently.

Cleaning Staff

Another good position is to become a member of the mall’s cleaning staff. Some might put this sort of job at the bottom of the list, as many people can’t stand cleaning. But it’s good if you like working alone and want to get some exercise on the job. Also, it’s more likely you’ll be able to find a full time job working as a mall employee, instead of working in one of its stores.

Movie Theater

Many malls have movie theaters, which are also great places to look for work. As with the other options, movie theater jobs don’t require any special skill or previous experience. With so many things automated these days, you can expect to spend most of your shift just standing around ripping tickets. If you want a bit more action try working at the concession stand! There are actually a few options at movie theaters. You could work front of the theater, in concessions, or behind the scenes working the movie reel.
